The use of plastic must be reduced

In 2001, Södertälje began to sort out food scraps in green plastic bags. Over time, there has been less food waste and more household waste in the plastic bags - a content that cannot be made into biogas and biofertilizer. During manufacture, the plastic bag leaves microplastics behind, which are spread over the fields. There, the plastic can enter worms and other living organisms. The paper bag is degradable. More than 70 percent of Sweden's municipalities collect food waste and most use paper bags. From 1 November we will do it in Södertälje as well.

 

Why should we sort food scraps into biogas and biofertilizer?

Biogas reduces emissions of nitrogen oxides and other harmful particles in the air. Biofertilizer is used as plant nutrition for arable and forest land. It reduces plant greenhouse gas emissions and returns nutrients and humus to the cycle. With biofertilizer, the need to extract phosphorus from the earth's crust is reduced

 

Starting equipment.

It consists of bags for half a year's consumption and a holder made of recycled plastic to put the bag in. The bag consists of water-repellent, wet-strength kraft paper. The holder is important for the air to circulate around the bag and prevent moisture from making it wet

 

How to close the bag:

Easiest to close if you don't fill up. Remove the white strip and fold down the adhesive edge to the bag. The contents are valuable and must remain in the bag all the way to us. You then put the paper bag in the same place as you previously put the green plastic bag.

 

 

What cannot be thrown away in our bins must be thrown away at recycling stations.
